In moments, the office was surrounded by guards carrying heavy lead-tipped canes. Out of the office door stepped warden Larkin, Eudy holding his left arm. Directly in back of him came Captain Ryan flanked by Kessell and Barnes. Cannon, Stevens, and Kucharski, brandishing knives, quickly followed, and the tight little group huddled in the center of the walk under the Captain’s Porch. Davis leaned to the outer edge of the walk and called up to guard Joseph Brady in the gun tower above to hand down his rifle. “Come out a little further and I’ll let you have it,” he said. Shots rang out, and Stevens, standing at the side of the warden, crumpled to the ground. Guards leaped in and began wielding their canes. Warden Larkin broke loose from his captors but in the process was stabbed by Eudy and Davis; he collapsed about 15 feet from the walk. In the melee that followed, Captain Ryan was repeatedly stabbed, finally falling on a bench by the side of the outer office wall.
